5:00 pm
8:00 earn, top of the hour, i'm joining you live from new york, a lot of news this evening including this, insiders at nbc news say what is happening at their network is a slow motion car wreck and journalists are wondering if brian williams will again anchor.
5:01 pm
he will not be behind the desk for several days. they say he voluntarily temperatured down temporarily feeling that the swirling credibility scandal makes him hooch of too much of a part of the news right now. a short time ago, a news anchor mentioned his decision to step down. a word tonight about our colleague brian williams who has been under scrutiny this past week. this afternoon he issued a statement that says in part it has become painfully apparent to me that i am presently too much part of the news due to my actions. i have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days, his full statement can be found on the website. >> okay, interesting development that the other nightly newscast, abc and cbs have not covered
5:02 pm
this until tonight. >> all three acknowledged brian williams leave of absence tonight. it is a big cultural story. because you know i try not to get into it, but brian williams is the closest thing we have to walter cronkite. and for most people, nbc equals nbc news. to have him to step aside out of this public glare for a few days, if not longer, is real damaging, but he did make a decision, issued a statement, that he is stepping down to sort this out, and that he will be back. >> yes, he emphasized that in his statement, said he will return and regain the trust of his audience. every day you gain trust or regain trust or keep their trust. brian williams lost some people's trust in this story and he will have to work to gain it back overtime.
5:03 pm
that is if nbc lets him. there has been not but real silence at nbc him. >> i wonder what you think of the statement that we got from the nbc president that is initially a staff memo saying of course we're investigating this, we will give you a update, what they did not do is run to the supporter backing of brian williams. >> there was no message of support. you can imagine lots of ways they could have expressed support. i just talked to a person that has been at nbc for years. like everybody is talking about this. they said to me the company is giving itself a way out if that's what they end up wanting to have. they are giving themselves a way out by having brian williams step aside for a bit and having lester holt fill in for the time being. it is now a ticking clock. now every day, folks will wonder -- >> is he back on -- >> in this very tight knit tv
5:04 pm
news business. and every night that he is not back on we will probably look back. >> you mentioned facebook, and this might not have transpired without facebook? >> yes, social media has really changed everything. his comments on the nightly news about having his helicopter being hit by an rpg when that apparently didn't happen. they were broadcast on friday night, and soldiers started saying hey, buddy, we were on that chopper and you were not there with us. he had to address it. some people say the apology was not enough. without social media in this case this would not have happened. brian williams has been somewhat resistant to social media. he famously has a twitter account that a quarter million people follow but he has never
5:05 pm
twe tweeted. so it is irony and sadness that it was social media that brought this to the forefront. so when he started to exaggerate his story, social media was nonexistent. >> so you will talk about it in your show at 11:00 a.m. eastern. >> yes, we'll see if chuck todd says anything. also this, i want to bring you news we have been following, bruce jenner involved in a car accident. he was not injured, but that is all we have at this point in time. they're saying one person is dead, five others are hospitalized with injuries after what turned out to be a four-car crash. absolutely tragic. the person killed was driving one of the cars and was pronounced dead at the scene. we don't know who died or the
5:06 pm
names of the five injured and hospitalized right now. this happened on the pacific coast highway in malibu. joining me now is mark garagos. i understand you have new was about the investigation that has been launched? >> i talked with people from the sheriff's department, they ratcheted this up to a have hick lar homicide investigation. they also asked for and my sources tell me they have or are in the process of getting blood alcohol results from everyone involved in this. it is true there is a fatality and they will. >> just to be clear here, all of
5:07 pm
the reporting that we have says that have hick lar manslaughter investigation, is that what you're hearing? manslaughter? >> that's exactly what i'm hearing. to ratchet this up to a murder investigation, you would have to have somebody that is responsible for the death in the vehicular accident to have a prior conviction, or to be driving incredibly recklessly or something like that. so far there is no kind indication that is the case. >> let's be very clear here, bruce jenner is the name across the screen and the photos because he is a celebrity. we don't know anyone else involved. however, everyone in these cars is being looked at right now in this investigation, is that correct? >> that is absolutely correct. everyone in it, and by all accounts so far, and what i'm being told, it is a multicar collision. so he is not the only one involved.
5:08 pm
it is kind of like dominoes where there is a succession of cars involved. but i will tell you that i am also told, and not through the sheriff, that his family or his people have already reached out to an attorney, and it will become apparent shortly it is one of the usual suspects, and that he is cooperating by all accounts. and that this would be the normal course of action where it would be investigated as a vehicular manslaughter. and there is no kind indication at this point that it is a murder, and in california, you can have a murder investigation, or a murder charge when it is a vehicular accident. there is no indication at this point that this is what's going on. >> and we reported that bruce jenner willingly took a breathalizer test on scene, will there be any blood tests or
5:09 pm
other tests done on the people involved in this crash? >> yes, i would be shocked if there wasn't, and i don't have any information other than my experience in this. even if there is a breath test taken, and even if we came back at a .00, i would be shocked if they didn't take him for a blood test. i would be shocked if his own lawyer didn't recommend that he immediately go to a hospital and get what is called a tox screen and they take the blood and run all drugs, you don't want any suggestion that it was chog or some other drug. that can be just as bad for you. >> again, everyone being looked at in this investigation, we appreciate it very much, mark geragos, thank you for the reporting. >> thank you. also, this stop story, the family of u.s. hostage kayla mueller says they're hopeful
